Understanding Refractive Errors: An Overview of What You Should Know

June 4th, 2018
what is refractive error?

What is a refractive error?

A healthy and fully functional pair of eyes possess the ideal eye length together with the usual curvature of the corneas. These characteristics enable the eyes to properly refract light for clear vision. Any departure from these characteristics causes refractive errors that allows light to bend incorrectly within the eyes.

Your eye doctor in Jacksonville here at Trillium Eye Care, will be able to immediately diagnose if you carry these errors by performing an annual eye exam. Through this exam, we will be able to provide you with the appropriate prescription glasses, contact lenses or surgery that suit your eye care needs.

How do you get refractive errors?

Refractive errors are genetically inherited or obtained through aging. Environmental conditions may contribute to the worsening of these eye vision errors. But ultimately, it cannot be acquired through any form of activity.

There are four common types of refractive errors which are:

Myopia or near-sightedness is the most common type of refractive error that makes the close range vision sharp, while it blurs distant viewing. An activity like reading books is easily accomplished by people with myopia, but viewing at a great distance requires them to put on eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Hyperopia or far-sightedness is a condition where distant viewing is clear while focusing on close objects makes vision blurry.

Presbyopia is developed by the time a person reaches the age of 40. As aging progresses, the lens of an eye becomes rigid, which makes it difficult to focus light to the retina. As a result, blurry vision is obtained when the eyes try to focus on close objects.

Astigmatism occurs when the eyes cannot focus light evenly onto the retinas. This makes vision stretched out and blurry whenever it tries to focus closely or at a distance.
