How Often Should You See Your Eye Doctor (Optometrist)? Turns Out, At Least Once a Year!

These days our eyes have to work harder than ever with how consistently we look at digital screens, our eyes focus to an extreme extent causing fatigue and strain. This is not good news for our eyes!


That is why our optometrists in Jacksonville here at Trillium Eye Care, strongly advise patients to have annual comprehensive eye exams performed by their eye doctor. This is especially true if you find yourself doing highly detailed work or other activities that require a lot of eye focus.

There are a handful of factors which make the eyes work even harder than they should have to.

High Screen Brightness Digital devices suggest a certain amount of screen brightness for a reason, it is the correct amount of light intake your eyes can be comfortable with at a distance with proper room lighting. High screen brightness strains eye muscles and excessive screen brightness can actually cause serious vision damage.

Very Short Distance of Digital Screen from the Eyes The recommended distance of a smartphone device from its user is a foot, desktop computer monitors should be at least 2 feet away from a viewer and television should be at least a meter and a half distance from its viewer. Anything short of these distances will lead to eye discomfort, discussing your habits with your eye doctor is a great first step in managing your digital eye strain symptoms.

Always make sure to wear sunglasses with proper UV protection to shield your eyes from these damaging elements.

While Staring at Screens we Blink Less Often Leading to Eye Strain That’s why optometrists advise to follow the 20-20-20 rule; every 20 minutes they advise you to take a 20 second break from your screen and focus on something 20 feet away from you. This helps prevent digital eye strain and allows your eyes to relax. We often forget to blink while staring at our screens for prolonged periods of time leading to eye strain.
